With everything going on in the world today, it’s no surprise that some of us are getting the opportunity we’ve always dreamed of, or so we thought. Whether you’ve been forced to work remotely or have been laid off due to the pandemic, we are certainly at an all time high of “working from home“. While most people have always wanted this lifestyle, some have come to the realization that this may not be as easy as they thought it would be. Especially if you’re now at home with your children and/or spouse this can become an overwhelming nightmare quick. For those of you who have been struggling to keep that life/work balance in order while working from home I have 6 tips below that will hopefully “soften the blow” for you!
1. Dress Like You Are At Work
Now, I’m not saying you have to put on a suit/dress and heels or a full face of makeup but and I strongly say but, if that will help you feel more awake and productive then absolutely go for it. What I mean by dress like you are at work is to take the pjs off and dress for success (whatever that looks like to you) So wake up, shower and get dressed for the day ahead!
2. Create An Office At Home
Creating a space in your environment solely for work increases your chances of being productive and efficient. Having a neat and clutter free area with a desk, chair and a lamp should suffice! Laying in your bed on your computer just won’t cut it. Having a designated area for work tells your brain its time to do just that. You don’t need the fanciest office desk or a swivel chair but make sure you get plenty of light to keep you focused and in a good mood!
3. Take Mental Breaks
This one is super important right now more than ever! Burn out and overwhelm are real on top of trying to stay informed on world events and manage our mental health. If you can, take a break after a few hours of working. Stretch, go for a walk, drink some tea/water… whatever you choose to do just make sure you disconnect from your work and connect with your inner self.
4. Limit Distractions
As previously stated, most of us have our children/ spouses home during this time which makes working from home a serious project. This is why we must set boundaries for ourselves and everyone in the household during our working hours. You could simply put a “DO NOT DISTURB” note on the door of your office but for those who don’t have an actual office, setting hours where the house is quiet must be put into place or perhaps working when others are sleeping or away will help. Just try to emphasize that you absolutely need your quiet space so you can stay focused.
5. Keep Work Time + Personal Time Separate
Setting boundaries for yourself during the work day will keep you on track and getting the most out of your work day. I would suggest not starting a new series on Netflix during your lunch break at home (although you have the liberty to do so). Also, try to not work over your set hours and overextending yourself. Give yourself a set schedule saying: I’m going to work 9am-4pm and then close your computer. When its time for work, work and when its time for play, play.
6. No Company Allowed
As amazing as it probably is to your friends and family that you are working from home and they can come over and hang out during the middle of the day (if they’re currently not working or working from home as well) I would advise against it. One, we are still in the middle of a pandemic and we should be mindful of the company around us and our loved ones and secondly, that’s a major distraction as tempting as it sounds! Tell your friends/family that as much as you love them, you have to stay focused and finish working. During your free time they’re more than welcome to come over (if you’re up for it) So, to sum this up everything is about boundaries and making sure you’re taking care of yourself during these unpredictable times!
