“The newer version of yourself is always better than the last”-Jasmin Willis
With New Years being less than a week away, now is the time to set your goals for 2020. That includes your personal, financial, spiritual and any other type of goals that you consider to be important to you! Ok, we’ve all heard the saying “new year, new me” and personally I love it, but what actions are we going to take to ensure this to be true? I’ve listed below 10 simple goals that we can make a part of our lives to assist in having the best year in 2020!
- Drink a glass of water when you first wake up and before you go to bed
We all know the importance of drinking water every day and how our bodies are made up of about 60% of water but do we actually drink it consistently enough? Some people are very good about making sure they drink water but most of us sadly not so much. I think simply having a glass when you rise and before you go to bed is a pretty simple start to making sure we incorporate water in our diet! ( keep a glass on your nightstand as a simple reminder to drink up)
2. Start a gratitude journal
If you don’t know what a gratitude journal is I’ll be more than happy to tell you! A gratitude journal is a notebook/ notepad in which you write down a list of all the things you’re grateful for. Some people write in them on a daily basis and some every so often but I think in order to receive the benefits that writing in your journal can bring it should be done daily. You can do it at night as you reflect on your day or you can do it early in the morning when you wake up. Simply list everything that you’re grateful for and watch how your attitude changes in a positive direction over time. Also, in some cases watch your gratitude list increase! When we appreciate what we have we are often blessed with more!
3. Practice Yoga/ Stretching
Starting off your morning with stretching is an excellent way to kick start your morning. Stretching not only reduces stress but it improves digestion and helps with anxiety as well. Taking a yoga class once a week (if possible) is a great way to connect with other likeminded people while getting your stretch on.
4. Read a new book every month
Reading adds so much value to your life and there are so many ways to incorporate it into your daily life. You can read a few chapters in a book a day, listen to an audiobook while you’re on your daily commute or even listen to a podcast before bed.
Meditation is a practice where an individual uses a technique – such as mindfulness or focusing the mind on a particular object, thought or activity – to train attention and awareness, and achieve a mentally clear and emotionally calm and stable state. The benefits of meditation are phenomenal! I’ll list a few below:
- Lower blood pressure
- Improved blood circulation
- Lower heart rate
- Less perspiration
- Slower respiratory rate
- Less anxiety
- Lower blood cortisol levels
- More feelings of well-being
- Less stress
- Deeper relaxation
6. Cut back on unnecessary spending
How many times have we spent a large amount of hard-earned money on an item/items we didn’t really need? The thought hits you afterward like “I didn’t really need that” and now you’re stuck with buyer’s remorse. Well, not everyone has that problem but for those of you that do, how about this year completely cut back on spending money on things we don’t need. Save that money instead for something more valuable (in my opinion) like an experience. I mean, don’t we have enough junk we don’t even use?
7. Organize/ clean your space
Let’s start the new year off with a clean house and try to keep it that way as long as we can. When your space is clear you’re able to think more clearly and studies have shown you’re more productive! Dump that junk you don’t need.
8. Go walking 2/3 times a week
Going for a walk is so relaxing and mind-clearing. If you get a chance on your lunch break, go for a quick walk to clear your mind from the workday and regroup. Before or after work is also a good time to walk. Make sure you’re in a well-lit area if you’re walking in the evening. There are also so many health benefits to walking so you can’t go wrong there!
9. Educate yourself
A wise man once said, “you should work harder on yourself than you do on your job”. Very wise words indeed! Educating yourself and learning new skills is a MUST! If there’s one thing no one can ever take from you, it’s your knowledge. In this new year coming up, take the time to learn more. Read books, watch videos, take classes, etc. The possibilities are endless in this day in age.
10. Cut toxic people out of your life
This is a major one. How can you possibly have a happy or peaceful life when you are surrounded by toxic people. A toxic person is anyone who is abusive, unsupportive, or unhealthy emotionally—someone who basically brings you down more than up. These people can be coworkers, friends and even family! GET RID OF THEM IN 2020 (thank me later)
